1. Minutes of the last meeting 26th October 2006
These were agreed as an exact record.

2. Libraries are good for business
Carl reported that this project has now been brought to an end by MLA Yorkshire and he has produced a final report. Carl felt that the project had been successful in showing the pattern of business information provision by public libraries in Yorkshire; in encouraging library services to work together and to some extent to support the advocacy work of MLA Yorkshire. Joyce reported that the report was being used by Sheffield Libraries to inform the development of their Business Plan. Margot asked if there would be mileage in getting more of a reaction from Yorkshire Forward (YF) to the report. Carl pointed out that MLA Yorkshire had done some advocacy with YF and that libraries were mentioned in their strategic plan. Getting libraries to sign up to the Better Deal for Business agreement was the next step but there was no knowledge of if any of the heads of service were planning to do this. Carl mentioned that originally one of his recommendations in the final report had called on YF to take action but that MLA Yorkshire had modified this. Joyce mentioned that YF was tendering for the regional business support gateways. (For a further discussion of this issue see the SINTO wiki page at http://sinto.wetpaint.com/page/Business+Information+Group )

3. Advert in Business Start-up Guide
The advert for the four South Yorkshire public library business information services has been published in the latest edition of the Business Start-up Guide. As well as the advert there was some extra editorial coverage - a mention of SINTO in the directory and a reference to PATLIB UK at Sheffield Library under Intellectual Property.

4. Training events.
Dan Bye had been asked if could offer a course on sources of business information and had replied that he would need to know more about what was wanted. It was felt that there was a need for information about free, easily accessible on-line sources of information on business start-up, management issues, company information, mailing lists, stocks & shares, foreign business information, directors and exports.
Social enterprise was also suggested as a subject for a course. Also a course on the EU for non-specialist staff. The Europe Direct centre at Leeds will be approached for help. 5. SINTO Business Directory
Carl reminded the meeting that this had now been extended to cover all Yorkshire libraries.
6. Business Information Newsletter
Issue No 26 was published in January.

7. Information exchange
Sheffield and Rotherham libraries will have a stand at the Enterprise Show in Sheffield 28th/29th March. There is another show in Leeds on 24th/25th March.
Claire reported on the Skills for Small Business programme running in West Yorkshire

Carl announced that he has set up a SINTO wiki and blog to communicate with SINTO members. The blog is an on-line diary which will cover news about SINTO's activities and Carl's observations on professional issues. The wiki is a website that will have pages for the SINTO subject groups and seminars. People can use this to discuss matters of interest especially if they can not attend the meetings. All Business Group members are invited to join in. Details are attached.

8. Date of next meeting
The date of the next meeting is Thursday 14th June 2007 at 2pm. Venue to be agreed.

SINTO the Information Partnership for South Yorkshire and north Derbyshire SINTO Wiki and Blog The SINTO wiki (http://sinto.wetpaint.com/) is a web page that contains a number of interactive features. Like other wikis, an entire community - in this case all staff in SINTO member organisations - can contribute to the information found on the web pages. The SINTO wiki will not replace the SINTO web site (www.sinto.org.uk) but will introduce some new interactive features: · Follow up for courses and events. Staff find our CPD and training events very useful, but what happens when you get back to the workplace? Do you put what you learnt into practice? A wiki page will be set up for each event so that participants and others can continue to discuss the topic, exchange hints & tips, share information and ask for help. · Expanding the SINTO Subject Groups. SINTO runs a number of specialist Groups so that staff from different libraries can get together to discuss matters of common interest. However it can be difficult to get away from the workplace to attend a meeting. Pages on the wiki for each group will provide an on-line forum for people to join in with the discussions. The SINTO blog (http://sintoblog.blogspot.com/) is an online journal written by Carl Clayton the SINTO Director. In the blog I will mention SINTO events and activities and also discuss issues of general professional interest with a local focus. I hope that this will provide a useful current awareness and CPD tool for librarians in the region and input from readers will be welcome. Please look at both these sites and contribute to the SINTO community of interest. Carl Clayton c.j.clayton@shu.ac.uk
