Hello Everyone! I will be attending the next training on the Tuesday 24 June. I am coming from York and I am having trouble finding a connection that gets me to the museum in time for the training. By the time I can arrive in Wakefield or Huddersfield, the next bus I can get to the Museum arrives after 10:00 (I rely on a bus to get to the station in York, so this limits the trains I can catch). Could I catch a lift with one of you from Sheffield or wherever you are travelling from? I can get a train to Sheffield or Leeds or anywhere and meet you to travel together down to the museum and then back into town to get a train back to York. Thanks in advance! Geoff

Hello everyone
This is the online task timer I mentioned in our session last week. http://davidseah.com/tools/ett/alpha/
Just add your tasks on the left, and then every 15mins click to fill in one of the lozenges to show what you've been doing. You can then print it out at the end of the day to keep a record of it. When you open up the page the next day, all your tasks will still be listed, but the lozenges will be blank - ready to start again. There are lots of different time management tools on his site - but this is the one I found the most useful and motivating. I've not used it in my current job - but I think I will give it another go. It helped me see where my time was going, and also helped me stick to one task at a time rather than flitting between lots of different things.

So what do we think about the course after last week? I'm really looking forward to it and think one of its strengths will be the mix of people from different organisations.....although I'm not sure who is left running Sheffield Galleries!

Hello everyone, It was great to meet everyone and I think once we get stuck in to the course there will be some really interesting things. I'm really interested in looking at ways which libraries and galleries can work together more closely, so I think it'll be a great chance to find out more about libraries in general. We're a fairly huge organisation (about 150 of us I think) so I think they just about managed without us!! :-) Catherine

A very interesting report on information literacy skills has been published. http://www.bl.uk/news/2008/pressrelease20080116.html It confirms that many young people have very poor information literacy skills when it comes to finding and evaluating material.

I have listened to the CIBER Information behaviour of the reseacher of the future.Having been party for 5 years to my childrens Infant school Library /Literacy programme I now find myself being paid for 2 hours during library time in the juinior dept. next door.Yes its for story time but the professional in me cant help but introduce IL skills for these year 3/4`s.Not knowing of any guidelines I have instinctively continued with the childrens enthusiasm for their newly found reading skills having sessions on different styles of books-flip/popups for them to read aloud, use clear voices and develop presentation skills.Having access to weekly plans for national curriculum lessons I feel much can be adopted for IL standards for objectives/success criteria/independant/whole class work and learning outcomes.I wonder if Ofsted are persuing this for School Libraries?I feel keeping the childrens natural enjoyment of handling literature is important before tackling Dewey.Next few library sessions include collections-toy/listening with appropiate props and aeroplanes as a theme for introducing levels of information.I believe it important to keep childrens curiosity at this age going and I believe a disciplined continuous approach to be one key for effective learning in the progressive assimilation of IL skills Meanwhile we continue to enjoy N.Hiltons Beaver Towers. From the Good Fairy Librarian!

Ihave had the privilege to have been an Infant School Librarian for 5 years on a voluntary basis in a school in North Yorkshire ,running a service for a designated library literacy time involving whole class and parents/carers.Are there any more of this rare breed out there? The scheme operates in highly successsful manner- 6-7000 issues per year ,high attendance record and beyond a doubt percentage increase contributions to literacy levels in the school.Have other Infant/Primary school librarians similar success stories? Have others best practice ideas in the current plight of low level literacy achievements of school leavers?

The recent report "Information behavour of the researchers of the future" (see my blog at http://sintoblog.blogspot.com/2008/01/battle-lines.html) shows that students entering FE and HE have very poor information literacy skills. This topic has been neglected in primary and secondary schools and now the higher education sector is suffering the consequences. School librarians should be at the forefont of this.

At the recent training event for raising awareness of mental health I recommended a book. In case you didn't take a note of the details it is called "I had a black dog" by Matthew Johnstone and the ISBN is 9781845295899. I would welcome any feedback once you have had a chance to have a look at it. As I shared with you at the training seesion I have suffered several bouts of severe depression and I feel the book captures very well what it feels like to be depressed. Following the mental health awareness raising course I checked out Facebook - the social networking site (which we looked at in our Social Computing course). There are a number of Facebook Groups on mental health issues and presumably on other health issues. These may not be the best source for authoratitive & accurate medical information but they are of interest for discussion and support.

You might be interested in comparing the CSFs identified by participants in the Flip chart documents attached to this page with the "essential elements for success" for public libraries as listed by John Dolan of MLA in A Blueprint for Excellence: 1. Focus on the user, potential users and the community. 2. Agreement of DCMS and the sector on a shared purpose and an action plan to achieve it. 3. Public libraries firmly established at the heart of national, regional and local policy agendas. 4. Adequate funding to for improvement and innovation. 5. A well resourced communications strategy. 6. Mechanisms to provide and coordinate national programmes that achieve buy in locally. 7. Motivated and skilled workforce. 8. Means to foster partnership working nationally and regionally.
